Etiquette Systems has put together a handy little guide for ordering a beer in 50 different languages.

Some of the more notable include:

Chinese - “Ching gay woh ee bay pee joh!”
Greek - ” Mee-a beer-a paraka-loh!”
Spanish - “Una cerveza, por favor!”
Lakota (Sioux) - “Wan-jee m’nee-pee-gah, ee-yo-kee-pee!”

I have begun a page that will keep track of a great number of useful CoD4:MW links.  You can go here http://timewastersparadise.com/?page_id=60 or click the CoD4 Links menu item above.

This list is in its infancy so if you have a good link, please send it to me and I will make sure it gets added.

That’s my cheesy attempt at coming up with an acronym for my frustrations…

Surely I am not the only person who is frustrated when they pick up a new game have to completely relearn the controller layout. Am I? I can’t be. I consider myself an avid video game player. I own the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, other dated consoles (Xbox, Playstation 2, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo, Atari 2600), as well as a computer that I have gamed on in the past. I mostly use the Xbox 360 for gaming because the games are so much better than the other “next-gen” consoles. This is my opinion, only. The thing that frustrates me is having to completely learn a new controller scheme each time I pick up a new game… especially a first/third person shooter. I realize there are many different “players” in the video game development industry but for Christ-sake, come together and standardize some default controller layouts!

Most of this came from my memory, so I apologize if it’s not accurate.

Most recently, I’ve bought “Army of Two” and a week later, “Rainbow Six: Vegas 2” both for the Xbox 360. Well, originally, I bought Army of Two for the PS3, but took it back and exchanged it for the 360 version… a story for another day But, to stay on topic, I cannot count the number of times I instinctively pressed the B button to crouch and blew myself up with a grenade or attempted to Weapon Zoom by pressing the Left Trigger and ended up taking a bullet in the chest. Yes, I was(am) a big Call of Duty 4 player and want to be able to switch back and forth between RBSV2 and CoD4 but will have too many issues keeping the buttons straight. I know that CoD4 allows you to somewhat customize the layout… at least I think it does.

Oh well, I’m venting my frustrations. Anyone else have this problem?

Calloftheday.net has “doctored” up some popular video game boxes to be more truthful of the content.  Some of these are really good.

Video Game Box Art Edits 2

He has another list of Box Art Edits but they’re currently not available.

Here’s a YouTube video of some other fake video game artwork

Where are my BASIC programmers with mad skills at? A big majority of the visitors to my blog visit because of The Definitive Tower Defense Game List. We all love tower defense. I’d like to see if it can actually be done - a tower defense game written in BASIC.

This conversation started in the post, Commodore 64 Still Loved and I thought it would be a fun thing to actually do. I would like to see what kind of master-BASIC programmers we have here. I don’t even know if it could be done.

Here are the rules to this competition:

  • All code must be written in the BASIC programming language. I know there are various flavors. Nothing of the Visual variety will be accepted.
  • No outside components/objects can be used that are not written in BASIC
  • Graphics must be created using ASCII characters only
  • Source code must be submitted with entry
  • A compile executable would be nice as well, if possible
  • The game engine must produce multiple waves of creeps
  • The game engine must keep score (points, waves, money, etc.)
  • The game must have at least three different tower types with different bonuses
  • The towers must be able to be upgraded through purchasing
  • The Creeps’ strength must increase with each successful wave
  • The Creeps goal will be to destroy some object (castle, base, etc.) or make it through an exit path before being destroyed.
  • Sound is not required but would be a huge bonus
  • Mouse support would be nice but not required if tower placement can easily be achieved without it.
  • Program must be written for PC-based hardware.
  • All programming must be submitted by February 1st, 2008.
  • If multiple entries are submitted, the users will vote for the winner.
  • The winner will received a Time-Wasters’ Paradise shirt.
  • All playable versions of the games submitted will be added to The Definitive Tower Defense Game List. So you will be world-renown!

If you can think of anymore valid rules, I’d be interested in hearing them. All rules will be finalized by 12/21/2007.

Check out this article on CNN - http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/ptech/12/07/c64/index.html. I haven’t thought about that system for a long, long time. I actually had the system before that, the Commodore VIC-20. I was just a wee little pup then… wow, that was a long time ago. There wasn’t any hard disk… I had a cassette tape reader that you could store stuff on. That was a blast, I tell ya!

I remember getting some monthly publication (I don’t recall the name) that had code in the back (Basic Language) of it for pages and pages. None of it made sense to me but I typed it all in, every month…

DATA 230, 322, 100, 023, 234, 111, 123, …

Line after Line after Line after Line…

How’s this for irony… that’s what I do for a living now. I’m a software developer. I still don’t know what the Data statements did and don’t have the energy right now to research it :-)

Shortly after the Commodore 64’s reign came the Commodore 128, which I did not own. A bit later I had an IBM Compatible Laser Turbo XT with a 300 baud modem that I used to connect to bulletin board servers and play only, text-based games. Oh, those were the days.

How funny is this? A boy in Norway survived a moose attack by ‘feigning death’ - a skill he learned playing World of Warcraft (WoW). He should have followed that up with Rank 10 Pyroblast :-)
